Fernando´s life ban upheld by CAS

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) have upheld Vernon Manilal Fernando s lifetime ban after the former FIFA Executive Committee member lost his appeal on Monday.

FIFA imposed a life ban on Fernando in 2013 after the Sri Lankan a close ally of Qatari football administrator Mohamed bin Hammam appealed against his initial eight-year suspension for multiple ethics violations, including bribery, conflicts of interest and accepting gifts.

Fernando appealed again, this time taking his case to CAS, however the quasi-judicial body confirmed the ban imposed by FIFA.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] has dismissed the appeal filed by Vernon Manilal Fernando from Sri Lanka, former FIFA Executive Committee member, read a statement released by CAS.

Ibrahimovic boosts Pioli as coach confirms striker is fit enough for Milan start

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in contention to start for Milan against Udinese on Saturday as the 41-year-old looks to lift Stefano Pioli s struggling champions.

The striker, recalled by Sweden this week, has recovered from major knee surgery and come through three substitute appearances.

Now the veteran is a prime contender to line up from the first whistle as Milan are forced to cope without the suspended Olivier Giroud in their last game before the international break.

Ibrahimovic is already the oldest player to feature for Milan in a Serie A game during the three-points-for-a-win era (since 1994-95), and Pioli would have no doubts about his readiness.

Zlatan is calm; he wants to play and win every game, Pioli said on Friday. He s feeling good, but I don t th…

Alaba hands Bayern pre-Liverpool injury boost

Bayern Munich have confirmed David Alaba is closing in on a return to action after the Austria international completed a light training session.

A tendon injury meant Alaba missed Bayern s last game, a 5-1 demolition of Borussia Monchengladbach that moved the defending champions level on points with Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Leon Goretzka have also returned to training this week to add to the options available to coach Niko Kovac, although Corentin Tolisso and Kingsley Coman are still out for Saturday s home game against Wolfsburg.

Bayern host Liverpool on Wednesday in the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie, the two sides having played out a goalless draw at Anfield last month.

Premier League Preview: Matchday 13

After two weeks away the Premier League is back this weekend, with arguably the pick of the weekend’s fixtures coming in Saturday’s late kick-off as Tottenham Hotspur take on Chelsea at Wembley.

The Blues are one of three sides yet to lose in the league this season and they will be confident of maintaining that record having won at the national stadium in last season’s corresponding fixture.

Spurs did however win when the sides met at Stamford Bridge on April Fools Day and can leapfrog their opponents if they take all three points here.

Man City will be tough – Klopp grounded despite Liverpool´s four-point cushion

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expects a really tough clash at title rivals Manchester City after his side won 2-0 at Wolves to stretch their lead atop the Premier League to four points.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring with his 11th Premier League goal of the season in the first half, then set up Virgil van Dijk after the break as Klopp s side eased to victory.

Liverpool s lead means they are guaranteed to top the table on Christmas Day and each of the past four sides to do so have gone on to win the league, the Reds themselves the last exception in 2013-14.

And although unbeaten Liverpool moved to 48 points from 18 games, Klopp expects a January 3 showdown at the Etihad Stadium to be critical, although his side first host Newcastle United and Arsenal over the …

Spain squad ´not perfect´, admits Del Bosque

Spain are the double defending champions heading into Euro 2016, but head coach Vicente del Bosque admits his squad is not perfect.

Under Luis Aragones, Spain ended their 44-year wait for a major international trophy by seeing off Germany 1-0 in the Euro 2008 final.

Del Bosque subsequently took over and guided the team to World Cup glory in 2010 before a successful defence of their European Championship title with a 4-0 demolition of Italy two years later.

A dismal World Cup 2014 saw them eliminated in the group stages in Brazil, but Del Bosque is optimistic a new-look squad can triumph at the upcoming finals in France.

The list is not perfect, we are sure that there are players who deserve to be here by their great season, but I leave it clear that I…

PFA stands by Bolton players as they refuse to play over unpaid wages

Bolton Wanderers players are refusing to play their last two Championship matches of the season due to unpaid wages – a decision that has won the backing of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA).

Squad and coaching staff members have still not been paid for March and first-team players reportedly refused to train for 48 hours this month in protest after club workers also went unpaid.

In a statement released on Friday, the players said they will not take to the field for fixtures against Brentford and Nottingham Forest until the matter is resolved.

This situation is creating mounting mental, emotional and financial burdens for people through no fault of their own, the statement read.  The mental pressure has affected some people to the extent that t…

Torino 7/4 to beat Sassuolo in Sunday’s Serie A clash

Competition: Serie A

Market: Torino to beat Sassuolo

Odds:

Serie A returns this weekend for a massive round of games that will surely bring a huge amount of goals and controversy, with the fans desperate to see their favourite teams taking to the pitch once again. The managers will be very aware of how important it will be to hit the ground running on their return, with three points vial. With this in mind, Torino travel to play Sassuolo on Sunday.

Sassuolo have been struggling this season and they are in danger of becoming embroiled in a relegation battle for the campaign to come. After 20 games they have won six, drawn three and lost 11, while they have scored just 13 goals, conceding 30 times along the way. In their last five there have been…

Tears flow as Iniesta announces Barcelona exit

Andres Iniesta s announcement that he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season produced an emotional response as the club legend fought back the tears.

The 33-year-old confirmed on Friday that would bring an end to his long and hugely successful stay at Camp Nou, but the Spain star found it hard to break the news.

Clearly choked by the realisation that his career-spanning stay with Barca was reaching its final weeks, Iniesta s voice trembled and his eyes welled up.

His reaction set off several others in attendance at the media conference, although his children appeared blissfully unaware of the emotionally charged atmosphere.

Tottenham duo Micky van de Ven and James Maddison ruled out until new year

Ange Postecoglou has revealed Tottenham are set to be without Micky van de Ven and James Maddison until January.

Centre-back Van de Ven and midfielder Maddison suffered hamstring and ankle injuries respectively in Monday’s 4-1 loss at home to Chelsea.

Spurs also had Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie sent off during their first defeat of the season, which means Postecoglou will be without several key players for Saturday’s trip to Wolves.

“Fair to say a fair bit happened after Monday,” boss Postecoglou reflected.
