Mats Hummels would welcome Mario Gotze with open arms if the Bayern Munich attacker decided to return to Borussia Dortmund.
The 23-year-old left BVB for Bayern in July 2013 for a transfer fee of €37 million, but he has been unable to live up to the high expectations at the Allianz Arena.
Gotze has only started in five Bundesliga matches this season and was recently linked with a return to Dortmund, with defender Hummels feeling his former team-mate would be a shrewd addition for Thomas Tuchel s side.
I don t know how realistic a return to Dortmund is for Mario, Hummels told ZDF.
But he is a player with the potential to become a world-class player. We had some great times together, both at Dortmund and with the national team.

Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning have rejected reports they made an offer worth ¥1billion (€8.8m) for Inter defender Yuto Nagatomo.
The Japan international, 30, has been with Inter since 2011 and signed a new contract earlier this year to tie him to San Siro until June 2019.
Reports in Japan had suggested Jiangsu were looking to make Nagatomo their latest big-money signing following moves for the likes of Alex Teixeira and Ramires.
However, Jiangsu insist they are happy to stick with the high-profile players they have already brought in from overseas.
Contrary to Japanese media reports, Jiangsu Suning football club would like to clarify that no offer was made to Japan international Yuto Nagatomo regarding a move in the winter transfer window…
Liverpool welcomed Newcastle United to Anfield on Monday evening, and current form proved an important factor as the in-form Premier League leaders emerged victorious against the struggling visitors.
The first half ended goalless, though Liverpool dominated it completely. Their domination finally bore fruit with just over three minutes of second half gone, when Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock. But at the first instance of Newcastle hitting back, Alexander Isak equalized just five minutes later. Nonetheless, the Reds bagged two more goals in quick succession through Curtis Jones (74 ), and Cody Gakpo (78 ), and though Sven Botman briefly restored some chance for an uncertain finish in the 84th, Salah stepped up to convert from the spot two minutes later, after Newcastle goalkee…

Some people are fans of the Detroit Lions. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Detroit Lions. This 2017 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read all the previews so far here. Your team: Detroit Lions. Butthole is always on the menu. Only NFC team to never go to the Super Bowl, folks. Your 2016 record: 9-7. The best part was when they started 9-4 and then EVERYONE looked at the remaining schedule (Giants, Cowboys, Packers) and instinctively knew they were gonna lose out and blow the division to a Packers team that was two games behind with three games left. And so they did. Most predictable Lions thing to ever happen. They also lost to Tennessee in a game where they had three touchdowns called back by penalties. That is the SECOND most predicta…
